Adjusting SMPTE Start Time and Frame Rate Settings

Adjusting the SMPTE start time and frame rate is crucial for ensuring accurate synchronization of captions with media. Below are two methods to adjust the SMPTE settings: one by configuring settings directly at the file level during download and another by editing SMPTE settings via the file information screen. These two methods provide flexibility in configuring SMPTE settings for your files, either at the time of download or by adjusting them permanently through the file's information screen.

Note: The media file must be processed and ready for SMPTE adjustments.

Method 1: Offset Start Time and Adjust SMPTE Frame Rate (File Level Download)

This method allows you to adjust the SMPTE start time and frame rate for single files while downloading them. These options are only available when downloading single files without additional services.

Step 1: Navigate to the Download Screen

  • Click on the file you want to download.
  • Click the Download button.

Step 2: Adjust Settings

  • From the Favorite Formats, Web Captions, SMPTE, Transcript, All Formats tab, click Additional Settings (the label may vary based on the selected tab).
  • For web caption or transcript downloads, you’ll see the option to offset the start time of the first word.
  • For SMPTE caption downloads, you will also see the option to adjust the frame rate.
  • Modify the settings based on your desired start time and frame rate.

Method 2: Edit SMPTE Settings for a File (File Information Screen)

This is useful if you need to set specific timecodes and frame rates that will persist for future downloads of that file.

Step 1: Select the File

  • Navigate to the My Files page.
  • Locate the file you need to download as an SMPTE closed captions file.
  • Click the file’s name to open the file-level actions menu.

Step 2: Click the Edit Details Tab

  • In the file-level actions menu, click the Edit button next to File Information.

Step 3: Configure SMPTE Frame Rate and Timecode

  • On the File Information screen, you can edit the SMPTE settings:
    • Starting Timecode: By default, the starting timecode is configured based on the caption settings, typically set to 00:00:00:00. However, this can be modified as needed to suit your specific requirements.
    • Framerate: The framerate is set by default according to the caption settings. A dropdown menu will allow you to select the desired framerate, which can be adjusted to meet your needs.
  • After configuring the settings, click Save Changes.

Step 4: Final Result

  • Once updated, any future downloads of this file as SMPTE-based closed captions will use the new configuration for the timecode and frame rate.
